This Old House

Sometimes I look back at my decision to buy this old house and wonder if I really knew what I was getting into. There were problems from the get go. After buying it I had to move into it myself, with little help from Daniel because he had school and work. Then my work schedule prevented me from getting much done, add to that the fact that money was tight and that there was just SO much stuff that needed to get done I couldn't figure out where to start. That was a few years ago. It took over a year for me to really get moving on the house. Once I started I realized that all my planning was for nothing. The paint colours I chose were no longer the ones I wanted to work with. The floors turned out to be only HALF finished (so, picking up a corner of carpet and checking to see what's underneath doesn't always work out). Someone had stained and finished the floors....but left a section in the middle, where it looks like a throw rug sat, completely bare. Just wood. Splinters. Knot holes. The walls were covered in wallpaper that wrinkled when painted over. The ceilings were half finished with "popcorn". Fun fun fun.

The past two weeks I have been working on our back stairway. It is one of those steep, curving stairwells that so many old houses have. My Grandmothers' house had a set, and I remember loving them when I was a kid. The back stairs here were closed up by me after moving in. Thanks to a nasty leak from the roof the area smelled funny. The wallboard that was there was put up in the 1970's and covered crumbling plaster. I needed to start on this area so that we have an alternate route to the bedrooms and bathrooms so that my floors downstairs can get done. It was time to open up the old servants stairway and get to work. I pulled down the funky 70's wallboard panels. I saw much of the plaster come with it. The rest of the plaster was in sad shape, spotted with mold, horsehair sticking out here and there. I started scraping off the loose plaster, and cleaning the mold off of the good plaster that is still intact. Now I have begun replastering the walls at the bottom of the stairs and scraping the wallpaper at the top of the stairs. It's a slow, messy project. I can see a difference already, though. The little bit I've gotten done gives me hope.....reminds me of the awe I felt when I first saw the house with my realtor and admired the "good bones" and spaciousness of it. I love this house. Like any relationship though, there are the ups and downs. When I am feeling down about it I head to my dining room and look at all the work I put into it....and I am reminded that my work is always rewarded here. The house is slowly becoming a home. Again. The house once belonged to a man who helped found the little village I live in. I am hoping to restore some of the beauty that was lost in the careless years. Wish me luck.

Trim, Peeking Into the Past, Summer Fun and Bye Bye Comfort......

I have been so busy enjoying my summer, and working on the house, that blogging fell to the wayside. The hardest part has been trying to pull ALOT of projects together over such a small window of time. Very soon Daniel will start nursing school and a new life schedule will begin for us. Miss Ava has enjoyed her summer and has learned to count from 1-10. She has enjoyed picnics and sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles and swimming. My older daughters have been lounging at my moms house, coming home here and there, I miss them often, but I can recall being a kid and staying with my Aunt Marie and Uncle Charlie and swimming in their huge inground pool with my cousin from morning to night.....I never wanted to come home, I never wanted school to start up again. I just wanted to swim and ride my bike.
In addition to all the summer fun/work I have to note that Miss Ava has stopped nursing. It was pretty easy to stop physically, but emotionally I had a few moments where I felt kind of like "oh, I'm not her comfort anymore". It was sad, but then she was able to go to Nonnas' house with Daddy for the whole weekend and that makes her happy. Now she gets to sleep without any help from me, besides some cuddling.

The past few weekends I have been painting, mostly baseboards, windows, all the trim that needed a nice coat of white paint. After finishing up the two main rooms downstairs I figured I'd start in the front hallway too. I hadn't done anything to this area of the house. The walls are painted an awful faux finish over wallpaper. While painting the trim I noticed the wallpaper coming loose, I ripped a section off and found the old beauty in the pic above. I love that beneath the "old" wallpaper that I will eventually scrape off, is ancient wallpaper. I wish I could save it somehow. The print is almost oriental, and it looks (from that small section), to be quite beautiful. I thought, after having scraped much of the wallpaper in the house, that I would find something on the bare walls....a name, some old scribbles, a date.....but all I found were numbers, measurements for where the wallpaper seams would be. That was it. I was a little disappointed, but I am holding out hope that I will find something on the walls yet to be stripped.

Meant For Me

It's been a busy week here. I started working in the yard before it gets too hot to comfortably do so. I caught up on alot of things that needed to get done but somehow I never get around to doing. I also have been a thrifting maniac. Mostly clothing, save for this one item that I fell in love with.
Did you ever feel drawn to an item while shopping? I have. Mostly it's antique furniture. And mostly I can't afford it:-) Today while looking through the blankets at the Sal Val I came across an old quilt. I pulled it off the rack and inspected it. It was pretty faded and soft. Just like an old quilt should be. Then I started noticing the details. The quilt was patched here and there, noticeably so, some patches were shaped like hearts. A few patches were made up of bath towels, some areas were zig-zagged with hot pink and black thread (!!??). The towel patches were vintage looking too, I remember seeing the very same towels in an older relatives home as a child. It was really a crazy quilt!
I returned it to the hanger to walk around and think about it. I normally do this. I have lost some great treasures this way. You would think I learn, but....Anyway, I went back for it 5 minutes later. I needed that quilt! For ages I had been keeping my eye out for something akin to a picnic blanket for the family to use. This would be a GREAT picnic blanket. The best ever! Four dollars and ninety nine cents later later it was mine. My daughter Colette thought it was charming, too. She has pretty good taste for an 11 year old, I think it was the pink and black zig zag that won her over.
So here it is, my "crazy" quilt.....And just for the record, I had wanted to do a beautiful photo shoot with it sprawled out on the grass, but it rained all day long and I couldn't wait to get pictures of my new treasure!

I am currently obsessed with a blog called Thrifty Decor Chick. It's a well-written, chock-full-of-inspiration blog masterpiece. Sarah, who authors it, has a great way with words, and her creativity is inspiring. I've been pouring over her posts whenever I get a chance to sit down at the computer.
In addition to plopping in front of the computer and reading blogs, I've been busy cleaning out closets and selling Miss Ava's outgrown clothes on Ebay. It's a long process. I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. I'd rather be sewing. Or outside running around with the kids. A few days ago our big, old lilac tree started blooming.

The flowers are so heavily scented that I could smell them the moment I stepped out the back door. Considering the fact that the tree is near the back of our large yard, that's quite a feat!

The lilacs blooming means it's soon time for yard sales and picnics. Hanging laundry outside to dry. Swimming. SUNSHINE. I can't wait.

Beautiful Day

I didn't do much today.....just took the Princess to visit my Mom.

The weather was perfect. My Mom and I took Ava to the park and for ice cream. Ava has gotten so big. 18 months flew by SO quickly. Last year at this time I was taking my two older girls to the park and Ava was hanging out in her baby sling!

So, she's growing up.....but she's still my baby.

What I can do in a half hour......

I am so happy that I got to sew tonight. After finishing off a simple pair of shorts for Ava I decided to go through my thrifted stash and see what I could cook up.

The shirt on the left side of the picture was the one I chose to work with. It cost $.50. Nothing special, just a simple button down top. The fabric is so light and gauzy, I thought I'd make it into a cute summer top for Ava. After a quick snip here and there, I threw some elastic in and VIOLA~

I was originally going to put sleeves on it, but decided instead to leave them off. I zig zagged the armholes and they did this neat little fluttery thing. I just thought it was cute, and I was happy I had decided against sleeves. I didn't use a pattern, I didn't measure anything, and it still came out looking like a shirt.

Miss Ava seems to like it, too.

Earth Day

A visit to the local kids museum a few days ago left me happy that "recycling" clothing (and so many other things!) is simply carrying on a long tradition!
The plaque said, "Immigrants were very frugal. They did not waste. After something was worn out it was used in a different way." A perfect ideal for Earth Day!
I rummaged around at the local thrift shops this week and found some great things. Now I need the time to actually DO something with them! I keep buying pillowcases with the intention of making them into dresses (or maybe pants?) for Ava.
Sheets too! I have this dream of making myself some cute lounge pants.....
then maybe lounging in them. It's good to dream.

I've been buying vintage kids patterns from ebay like crazy.....I also thrifted a few. Let's hope the nice weather they're calling for this weekend doesn't distract me from my sewing:-)

Daffodil days

  • I can feel Spring in the air and I LOVE it. It's such a refreshing change from the cold, windy, rainy, HORRIBLE weather we were having last month. I love getting outside for long walks with the kids. It's the best exercise and it doesn't feel like exercise, you know? I started knitting a scarf. I am proud of the results so far. I wish I had more time to devote to knitting, because it is truly one of those hobbies that you can get completely engulfed in. I simply LOVE it. The baby likes to pull at the yarn, so I can only knit when she's not around, or while we're driving somewhere. That is, unless I'm the one driving. In which case I don't knit. Of course:-)

Easter.....

The bunny didn't disappoint! I have a household of happy kiddies with sugar rushes. Colette got her own knitting needles and yarn. How ever did the bunny know that she wanted those things?
It's wonderful to be able to share hobbies with your daughter.

Addicted to pants!

I must make a pair every two days for my Miss Ava. I can't help it, they're so darn simple and it's a project I can easily start and finish in an hour. I stumbled upon the Wardrobe Refashion website and suddenly my "clothes to be refashioned" pile was way bigger than my fabric stash! I was in heaven! I grabbed a simple Gap button down dress shirt that no longer fits me and made the lil' Miss a pair of awesome pants. No before picture. Darn it. I really just grabbed the shirt and got to business! The fabric is insanely soft and lightweight, these could easily be worn in the middle of summer. I even left the chest pocket on and now its a pants pocket. Perfect. I was always a little nervous at the thought of cutting up my clothes, but no longer!
